Wayne Gilbert The Classic Cremain Paintings
and

Mark Ponder Non Normative

Bill Arning Exhibitions / Houston November 12–December 18, 2022

Two hugely eccentric Texas based art makers a generation apart at 75 and 41 years old respectively, share the stage at BAE Houston.

Bill Arning Exhibitions was thrilled to show Wayne Gilbert’s major works using human ash as a painting medium to New York art lovers at the Outsider Fair last February. The critical response was over the top favorable , and on the theory that now after working in the Houston area for decades perhaps now he can finally be seen as the profound artist-philosopher he is in the city he has chosen for him home base.

Mark Ponder is one of Houston’s most widely exhibited and beloved art makers - and his art has taken many diverse forms, including performance, video, painting and sculpture. Over the last four years his work has grown more introspective, and while still relishing  the absurdity of mainstream visual culture there is today a certain gravitas. His work today is strictly limited to the most introspective form of drawing, graphite on exquisite paper stocks, each attempting to solve the riddles of his queer self expression.
